Almost 60% of all Canadian adults and 26% of our children and adolescents are overweight or obese.
To stop this growing epidemic, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, in partnership with government and other leading health organizations, has launched Target Obesity a major initiative designed to support and train investigators in the area of obesity research.
By contributing to a greater understanding of the environmental, biological, societal and behavioural factors that influence obesity, this initiative will lead to innovative ways to stop this epidemic and its negative health consequences.
The Foundation has also developed Action Plan on Obesity that includes a strong advocacy component to help support effective policies to prevent obesity by focusing on healthy nutrition and physical activity in Canada’s schools, workplaces and communities.
We have taken a leadership role by lobbying for health-conscious public policy. We are also working to improve nutrition and physical activity in schools and workplaces, and to learn more about the link between the way we plan our communities and obesity.
